Tomorrow, tomorrow…

Howie called just as I was sitting in the driveway, oggling a map of Baltimore for a better route in from I-95. Google Maps suggests this route (any locals care to comment?).

They want to keep him in overnight and see how he does after the transfusion. So, tomorrow it is. He also was watching the news and sees there are some bad storms moving through; he’d rather I not drive in them

In the meantime, we are going round and round with MetLife about his short-term disability claim. I’ve taken over contact with them because Howie is just not up to dealing with these stresses. There’s nothing like dealing with large insurance companies! The case manager and customer service reps contradict themselves within the same sentence, keep saying they need more info…Info that has already been sent to them, some of it multiple times, over the last two months. Because of HIPAA, doctors are not allowed to give information over the phone, so everything is done by mail or fax.

It is maddening. But, thank God, we are in the home stretch with that! Then we’ll get the disability pay they’ve been sitting on, collecting interest. The jerks.

But I digress. Aside from the insurance headaches, everything else has gone so very smoothly. We can’t let this one minor blip in the radar sink the Good Ship Morale. God didn’t take us this far for us to end up penniless on a streetcorner, holding signs that say “Will blog for food”, right? ;)

  1. Glad to hear things are still progressing well and you should be “home” by tomorrow. I hope the insurance crap settles soon. It really does seem to be more of a PITA sometimes than the procedures you have done.

Check that link out, many other folks are in the same boat.

The HIPAA laws are terribly loose and are being twisted to be excuses for delays. They can accept e-mails as long as they are encrypted. Zipped with a password is encryption enough too. If they say different, they are lying, I can get the rules for you Monday if you need them. Metlife certainly has a secure website that can be used also.

Make sure the HR department is involved. Sometimes they can speed things up. They should also have information about any secure websites and information transfer. I’m sure they transmit secure data to Metlife on a regular basis.
